With the vast array of beauty products available to us now, it’s easy to forget that sometimes the simplest approach is the most effective – particularly when it comes to skincare.

If you’re concerned that product-layering might be causing your skin more harm than good, you might be right. However, “it’s not a matter of how many products you’re using, it’s a matter of what you’re using,” expresses Dr Hiba Injibar, consultant dermatologist and owner of Dermasurge Clinic.

As a rule of thumb, it’s vital to consider each of the active ingredients in your cosmetic routine, as they all do a different job – but might not be compatible. “It’s always good to have an expert examine your skin and then decide what would be the best for your specific needs,” she adds.

How to know if you’re using too many products

When it comes to assessing how much is too much, Dr Injibar says there are various factors to consider. Think about who recommended those products, whether they are appropriate, and if you’re using them correctly. For example, “are they blocking your pores if your skin is already oily?” or, “do they contain abrasive acids, yet you suffer from rosacea?” These are all crucial factors to consider.

If your skin is breaking out or flaring-up, try stripping back your regime. Stick to a basic routine of cleansing and moisturising, plus SPF for daytime, to see if it recovers, then reintroduce products slowly. But, if your skin is generally happy, how many products does a skincare professional recommend?

While it is customary for a dermatologist to suggest products to patients only after evaluating their skin, she explains, “I might give them two-to-three active ingredients – from an acid like glycolic, to vitamin C and retinol – plus a sunscreen and moisturiser to use in different formulations.” Despite the fact that the number of active components appears to be high, Dr Injibar assures us that it is not excessive when used correctly.

What a recommended daily regime looks like

Firstly, cleanser is vital, and should be selected according to your skin type. “I prefer foaming cleansers since they clean well and can be washed with water, however cream cleansers can also be great.” Dr Injibar feels that adding toner isn’t necessary but can be used to balance the skin if needed.

“In the morning, I usually give my patients something containing an AHA or BHA,” she says. After the age of 30, she feels a minimum of 10 per cent vitamin C from a high-quality medical-grade product should also be used first thing. Next, “some patients choose a daytime cream with SPF”. If this is not the case, sunscreen is required at all times, regardless of the season.

It’s necessary to also cleanse thoroughly at night to ensure that all of your make-up is removed. “Never go to bed with make-up on,” she cautions. Following that, she suggests retinol at a low dose if skin can tolerate it. “Then my patients apply their moisturiser over the retinol and sleep with it on.” If you can’t use retinol every night or have sensitive skin, it’s recommended that you use it three times a week.

Because you can’t replicate lab results at home by combining ingredients, Dr Injibar advises using expertly formulated, medical-grade products – many of which are available to buy online.

Bazaar also recommends trying a virtual consultation with a skincare expert via GetHarley. A dermatologist or skin specialist will assess your skin and recommend personalised regimens consisting of pharmaceutical-grade products delivered to your door.

The active ingredients not to miss out on

As recommended above, vitamin C is the one ingredient she recommends we use under our sunscreen every morning. “It can enhance skin texture,” she explains, adding that it also has other benefits like reducing hyperpigmentation. It’s also an antioxidant, which means it can battle free radicals created by UV damage and reverse other signs of ageing on the skin.

Many cosmetic companies claim that their products contain vitamin C but they can be ineffective if less than 10 per cent purity. It’s also most effective, according to Dr Injibar, when it’s not combined with anything else. It’s important to consider the container should be dark and air-tight due to its high sensitivity to the sun.

On the other hand, retinol should only be used at night. It comes in various concentrations. “I start some patients with the highest concentration straight away,” Dr Injibar continues, “while others start low and gradually raise their dosage with the goal of using it every night.” While applying retinol three or four times per week can be effective, “it’s optimal to apply it on a daily basis” once your skin becomes used to it.

If you’re new to retinol, she recommends starting cautiously and then increasing your tolerance until you’re using it every night.

Products that are commonly overused

Using scrubs or brushes to exfoliate is inefficient and might irritate the skin. Acne, melasma, hyperpigmentation, and post-inflammatory pigmentation can all be aggravated by friction. “It’s possible that the skin will become inflamed if it’s sensitive,” Dr Injibar explains. Despite the fact that exfoliating technologies are constantly promoted in the media, the benefits often come with risks. “Manual exfoliation is something I rarely ask my patients to do. If they have rough skin on their body, I would advise them to exfoliate, but if they’re already using an acid or retinol on the face, that should suffice.”

The correct product will exfoliate and eliminate dead skin without requiring physical scrubbing. This is the preferred method, according to Dr Injibar. “When you apply a resurfacing product, it destroys the attachments – essentially the glue that holds dead cells together – and this is how it exfoliates.”

How to minimise the adverse effects of using the wrong products

“If I fear that a patient is harming their skin, we stop everything and start over with prescription products when they come to see me. If they’re just using the wrong products and overloading, I advise them to simply stop using them.”

But there are certain things that shouldn’t be immediately stopped. “If they’ve been overusing topical steroid creams, they’ll need to taper down. If they’ve been using it on their face, it’ll cause skin thinning, also known as telangiectasia. If it is immediately stopped, they’ll have a major flare-up.” Always check with a doctor before immediately stopping prescription treatments.
